Democracy in Action Coverage - 2008

Jan. 18, 2009--Over 1200 people attended the African American Church Inaugural Ball at the Grand Hyatt Washington. The theme was "We Have Come This Far By Faith!"

The ball had two purposes:
  1. To allow the collective community of the African American Church to join in the congratulatory efforts of the nation
  2. and 2. To support the charity, The Balm In Gilead, as it endeavors to provide health education and service delivery systems within African American church denominations to address HIV/AIDS and other health concerns which affect African Americans.
Honorees included Dr. Dorothy I. Height, now 96 years old.
Attendees at the African American Church Inaugural Ball included Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Pernessa C. Seele, founder and CEO of The Balm In Gilead, Inc., organized the African American Church Inaugural Ball. The Balm In Gilead is a non-profit which has mobilized churches in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Among the groups performing at the African American Church Inaugural Ball were two groups from Mount Vernon, NY: SAGE and the Grace Baptist Church Cathedral Choir directed by Minister Derrick James.
