| Rev. Hilda R. Davis-Carroll, Ph.D., L.P.C. |
Dr. Hilda Davis-Carroll's primary focus in her life's work has been the healing and wholeness of individuals, families, and communities. She has written articles for religious books, clinical publications, and a weekly health and spirituality column in a regional newspaper. Additionally she leads workshops, preaches, and speaks on topics related to health and spirituality.
Dr. Davis-Carroll is currently the Founder and CEO of JoyPath Unlimited where her private practice provides counseling and inspiration for life events, career clarification, accountability coaching, and support for people living with chronic illness. She has served as Project Manager for the Global Health Initiative for United Methodist Communications, the communications agency for the United Methodist Church. She was honored to serve in the Executive position of the first Director of the Faith Based Initiatives for the Tennessee Department of Health where she reported to the Commissioner of Health. As Director, she cultivated public health and faith collaborations across the State, designed and led trainings in congregations to promote healthy behaviors, and developed a DVD for building a health ministry, Power in the Pews: Having a Heart for Health. Along with the DVD, she created the content and resources for the Faith-Based Initiatives website, which is still active.
She has taught at both Vanderbilt Divinity School and Tennessee State University. Her collaboration on research projects at both Meharry Medical College and the Cancer Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center focused on the disparities in breast cancer mortality rates for African American women. As a former Chaplain at Vanderbilt Cancer Clinic and Metro General Hospital, Dr. Davis-Carroll combined the theory from her research with practical life skills to bring healing to people who need a caring presence.
Her work in local congregations led to the development of a curriculum for women, “S.A.C.R.E.D. Women” (Spirituality Activated Creates Renewal, Empowerment, Determination). This curriculum is also used with women who are incarcerated. It was expanded to have a HIV/AIDS and substance abuse emphasis. She has also done trainings and curriculum development for The Balm In Gilead, an international organization whose mission is to develop the capacity of faith communities to address life-threatening diseases.
Dr. Davis-Carroll received her doctorate in Religion and Psychology from Vanderbilt University. She has both undergraduate and master’s work in Psychology and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Tennessee. She is ordained in the United Methodist Church and continues to work with churches through classes and retreats in health and spirituality. She is married to Dr. Kevin C. Carroll, a diversity consultant and has a daughter, Erin A. Grimes, who makes her proud. Erin was a member of the first class to graduate from Dillard University after Hurricane Katrina and currently works in the hospitality industry.
